Glad to be aboard! I live in Lincoln, Ne and became just slightly obsessed with the idea of having our own chickens for fresh eggs and entertainment. My husband has finally given in to my obsession and is getting involved. We have 2 boys, 10 and 3 who are both excited for chickens. We do have 2 Australian Cattle Dogs so we think we have worked out how to live in harmony. My biggest frustration right now is actually getting chickens, TSC won't see less than 6 chicks and Orscheln is currently out. Orscheln's did tell me to check tues/wed as they should be getting another shipment but he also said they haven't been getting full orders so he didn't know what he would get until they come in. I didn't think getting chickens would be so difficult!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sorry you are having trouble finding chicks. This is the time of year that many feed stores do carry them. You might drive across town to a smaller feed store and see if maybe they are carrying any. I would give Orscheln's a chance. Just be there on that day to check out what came in.

There are a few Nation Wide hatcheries that will sell a handful of chicks. I think My Pet Chicken will sell as low as 3 chicks. Chickens For Backyards (I think this is the name of this Hatchery) will do so as well.

Check bulletin boards at feed stores, even Craigslist in your area. Be careful with Craigslist however as sometimes people are dishonest and can sell you sick babies. Just be aware of this.

We also have a Buy Sell and Trade section you might check out too. You can't place an ad until you have 20 posts, however you can post responses to ads if you see something you like....https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/67/buy-sell-trade

Good luck and I hope you can find some chicks soon!! Welcome to our flock!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear you are having trouble sourcing some chicks. TwoCrows has given you some great advice on chicks. Do you have breeds in mind? Be sure to ask any questions you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly. Hope you are able to get started with your chicken journey soon. Good luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Thank you both for the kind words and suggestions! I looked around craigslist and wasn't to keen on any of the posts I had seen. I was hoping to not have to have them shipped to me because of the shipping costs. My local Orscheln has been helpful so I am anxiously awaiting tuesday evening. It will give us time to make everything just right, we were going to use a tote for a brooder but my husband decided he wanted to build something bigger.

I knew I could get him. Breed wise I want a good layer and something docile for the family, might depend on whats available.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might consider getting six chicks at TSC and selling the extras, usually pullet chicks are pretty easy to place.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Sorry about the troubles you are having with getting chicks. I know how annoying it can be looking and waiting for the chicks you want! I experienced something similar back in 2012. Definitely check out the links provided by Two Crows. If you can't get them locally, I would recommend Meyer Hatchery and MyPetChicken.

Good luck!
