I'm afraid to ask, but what is eggbound and is there anything I can do to prevent it?

I know the answer to this one.

Eggbound is when the eggs become too large for the hen to pass through. This can be fatal to the hen. You should do come research though on what to do if this happens.

Yep, I had a hen who layed enormous eggs for a long time. Then she stopped laying but didn't seem to be ill in any way. Most folks report a lot of discomfort and distress with eggbound hens. NOT a good way to die.

Well, I processed my girl and found a huge, many-layered THING in her egg canal. It was this huge mass that took up most of her abdomen. In the middle of layers and layers of what looked like the white on a boiled egg, was a center filled with some horrible smelling yellow stuff. I would assume a rotten egg that had been encapsulated for some time.
