I just started the lockdown process this morning for my duck eggs and I was doing one last check I noticed one of the eggs seems to already have externally pipped?! This is my first hatch ever so I’m not 100% so naturally I came to the experts:)

I attached pictures of the egg and a (kinda low quality) candling picture of the inside. Let me know y’all’s thoughts!!

Yes, he is already pipping. Refrain from opening the incubator to candle or check on the eggs. You could accidently drop one or he could become shrink wrapped. Make sure to keep the humidity stable. It can take over 48 hours for ducklings to go from pip to zip so don't be too concerned if he doesn't seem to be making progress.

Shrink wrapping only happens when the incubator goes well over 12 - 24rs without water, or is super low on water, & the eggs membrane drys around the chick as a result.

When should I start hearing peeping coming from the egg? I’ve been out and about so not spending a whole lot of time around the incubator but should I be worried?

My experience with hatching chicks(I don't know tons about hatching ducks), is that they don't peep all the time, sometimes you won't hear anything for awhile, & then the peeping starts up again. Depends on the chick, sometimes they're extra noisy, & peep the whole day with barely a break in between.

If you're concerned, you can take the egg out for a minute, tap it gently to make it peep, or hold to your ear to make sure it's breathing.
