Hi,

I am new to this hobby. Can anyone tell me where to buy baby roosters for cheaper price?

Thank you,

Joel

I don't know what price is reasonable for you for a rooster, but here's the deal with roosters. Many people that keep chickens in towns and cities can't have roosters, so when they buy a flock of straight-run chicks (straight run=you don't know how many males and females you get), they almost inevitably turn up with one or more roosters they can't keep. They have to find homes for them. Same goes for people who hatch eggs and can only keep so many (or no) roosters. They have to find homes for them. My suggestion, if you're not picky about the breed, is to look on Craigslist or other Internet poultry sites to see if anyone has roosters to give away. I have come across some really awesome roosters on Craigslist. You can't get cheaper than free.

On the other hand, if you want to be picky and ensure that your roos are a certain breed or ensure that they've had proper vaccinations or come from a certified hatchery, you're gonna have to pay some. Roos are usually less expensive than hens if the hatchery sells sexed chickens. I personally order from http://www.mypetchicken.com/.

Man, go to your state thread, they are usually free, unless of course, they are selling a pure breed of some sort. We tease each other in our state thread, that we will rooster someone..meaning, that we will bring a rooster over and drop it off on their porch. :)

There is such a glut of roosters on the market - it's a great time to buy one. Check out the ads on BYC Buy/sell/ trade forum, always various cockerels or Roosters, pure bred, sometime even show quality for very reasonable prices. Of course shipping can end up costing more than the bird. If you can find them locally, you'll get a great deal.

Thank you all for your greeting and advice. I forgot to say that I live in San Francisco Bay Area, more specifically in East Bay, Hayward/Fremont district. Also I am looking for baby roosters or straight run to raise. If anyone knows a hatchery close by, I will greatly appreciate it.

Everyone gave you great advice, and of course, welcome to BYC. You know, if your luck runs like mine does you may not have to look for a rooster. You said yours are babies. Unless they are sex linked (which means that males and females look of the same breed or variety LOOK totally different when hatched) you may have one right under your nose! For example, Golden Comets (or Red Stars, Red Sex Links and several other names for basically the same bird) are sort of yellow with buff colored backs. The roosters are soft yellow all over. That's a sex linked trait. Same with Black Stars (or Black Sex Links). One sex will have a white spot in it's head, but I'm doggoned if I can remember whether that's the boy or the girl right now!

Little chicks are notoriously difficult to sex, as you can see by the number of posts asking what sex this chick or that chick is. Even though I bought all girls at a feed store last year, out of 6 supposedly female chicks straight from the pullet bin, I got 3 roosters. Yep. And when I ordered a dozen eggs to hatch under my broody hen, I got 15 from the shipper. One egg hatched. It was a rooster. So how old are your little ones, and do you know what kind they are? How many do you have? You might have a roo right now and it's simply too early to tell. It would help if we knew what kind of chicks you have.
