In the Brooder
Hello Everyone!
My husband and I just purchased our first home out in the country. We have 1/2 acre of land with a large backyard all fenced in. For some reason I want to get chickens. I only know one person in my family that has chickens and I saw her flock a few times. But I love animals, I enjoy caring for my animals, and would love fresh eggs! Now that we have our own space my husband has agreed and I am doing my research and coop hunting to start my own flock. I only plan on getting 3 hens so I'm not sure if that is even considered a flock.
In a few weeks I plan on getting 1 Jubilee English Orpington Greenfire Farm Line, 1 Rare Colored Silkies, and 1 Lemon Cuckoo Niederheirder Greenfire Farm Line. After a lot of research my husband and I decided on Orpingtons. However I love the appearance of the silkies so I am getting 1 of those as well. I am not getting them as chicks. I am waiting till they are old enough and can be sexed. I want 3 hens, no roosters for us. I don't think my neighbors would like that. Any thoughts?
I have 3 dogs so I will have to introduce them to the ladies. For the most part I plan on keeping them in the coop and pen. As well as letting them free range a few times a day. I'm not sure how the dogs will with handle the ladies so until I know the dogs will be inside while they free range. I just have no idea how hard it will be to get them back in the coop. I have a toy aussie 1 years old and thought I may be able to train him to herd them back in?
I'm hoping to pick up my coop today or tomorrow night and build the pen area. It was built to be a duck house but no ducks ever used it. It is a custom built duck house with 30-year metal roof. Completely water-sealed inside and out with removable roof for easy cleaning. Very sturdy and clean! Less than a year old and never used by ducks, although our chickens laid a few eggs in there. Duck house is 38”H x 47”W x 40”D. It also comes with 2 horse troughs for $75. I thought it was a pretty great deal. I have no idea about the pen yet but I'll figure it out as I go.
