Hello, I'm from Durham, Maine and I have wanted to start raising chickens for years. Now my husband is ready to get on board with me so now I'm researching as much as I can on where to start, what type of coop, what type of litter for cleaning and so on. Any help would be appreciated, looking at coop plans to start building anyone have an idea where the plans are to buy.

Well, if you plan on raising a few chickens (over 10), you may want to consider building your own coop. In one of my magazines that specializes about chickens, it recommends 4 square feet per bird. We built our coop from pieces of metal, wood, nails, shingles, and insulation we had laying around the house and only bought a couple of 2x4s, a little more insulation, and a couple of sheets of plywood. It mostly depends on how many birds you are going to get, as well as your budget.

Hi and :welcome

You should check out the Coops section at the top of the page - there are plans there submitted by members. :)
Most people use wood chips for bedding. We have a coop that has a dirt floor which we periodically add grass clippings to to give a nice smell.

Hope you find everything you need on the site!
