I did catch 1 this year, but after 26yrs of trapping you learn how to avoid them, same with skunks.

Thanks.Rats did real well here on price to,but we still have a very healthy population here.

Hoss, my area of Ohio is so over run with possums, I've caught them in live traps that had no bait in them, just the left over oder. I've caught them in unbaited and unscented sets intended for fox and coyote, sometimes, where you wouldn't believe they would be. However, I can't ever remember catching one in a water set. I've seen their tracks way out in the middle of fields where there was no edge for them to travel along. I just trapped one yesterday, in my DIL's chicken coop. It had to climb over a fence to get there. Luckily I had moved her chickens to my coop because something had killed one the night before. Taking no chances on loosing any more I had removed her birds. I have been caring for her birds, while she and my son are in Thailand.

I still laugh when I remember one of the first land sets my son set and caught a possum. He got so excited he started to run for the set location. I stopped laughing long enough to tell him to slow down, it was just a possum. One thing about possums, after the first couple years trapping a new area, you don't catch many after that, only the strays that move in. Where we live now, is right on a travel route for about all wildlife that is present here, so we get a lot of transients. The population keeps shifting.

I am not sure if there is a Trappers thread in the Hobbies sub-forum or not. Might be something for us to report in to if there is. I know there is one for fishing, one for hunting as well as many other hobbies, but if there is one for trappers, I'm not sure. There is a definite place for predator trappers on a chicken forum.

I used to catch a lot of opossom around here, but i don't see them like i used to.The man i sell all my fur to said there was an outbreak of distemper and mange that put a dent in the population a few years ago.
I don't have a whole of of predator problems here due to the dogs, the main ones i have to deal with are hawks and eagles, the ones you can't really do anything about.

Hoss, Did ya get my PM? It is a link the the Trapper thread in the Hobbies section. In fact I bumped it so it should be on page 1.

I've only seen an eagle a couple times here and not close in to the coop areas, but the hawks have gotten their share, like one is too many for me. They seem to be even harder on the rabbit population than the chicken population. Wish they'd start on the possums.
