Hi there! We have three Pekin ducks, Delilah, Duncan, and Danny, and yesterday I noticed that one of the males was displaying mating behaviors (head pumping) to the female while they were swimming in their pool, and then grabbed her and jumped on top of her to attempt to mate. All three of them are only two and a half months old, and I feel like they’re a bit too young to be mating? Advice would be appreciated!

Also, my female sometimes makes a squeaking noise instead of quacking. She’s totally healthy otherwise, but can I do anything to help or is it natural?

Thanks!

2.5 months is a little early for mating, but not out of the ordinary. They are practicing.

I’m not sure what you mean by a squeaking noise, sorry. I’d have to hear it.

Also, I hope you have a plan to rehome a drake or get more hens.. 2 drakes with just 1 hen will be lethal to your hen.
I see, thank you! I will try and get a video of the hen making a squeaking noise to send. Also, I didn’t realize that 2 drakes to one hen isn’t a good ratio. They didn’t seem to be acting aggressive to the hen yet, but I will continue to monitor them as they get older and immediately separate them if they become aggressive to her.

Once I figured out that two of them were male, I did get a bit worried about male mating aggressiveness and if they would gang up on her and injure her. I thought it would be okay, but now i see that it’s not, and I will monitor them carefully every day as they get older to watch for any mating aggressiveness. The second I see any, the aggressive male will be immediately separated. Thank you!

Are you positive that your one is a female since it is not quacking but making squeaking noises? My males would try to mate each other and also chase my girls when they were only 6 weeks old. That's how I could figure out what sex they were early on. None of my females would try to mate that early with each other. I have a male Runner duck right now that is young and squeaks so I do know it is a male by the sounds it is making is why I ask.

Yes, I know for sure that she's female because my other two drakes have started making their usual rasping noises already. She would've started by now, too.

Your luck sounds like mine when it comes to getting drakes instead of hens. My Chocolate Runner is a male for sure and another duck that I wasn't completely sure about is too. It's smaller though but still gives the Hens a run for their money.

It isnt aggressiveness, it is exhaustion. When she gets mated 4, 5 or 6 times a day, she will run out of energy and become exhausted. If she runs off one male and allows the other it could work, but that is unusual.

And 2 drakes to one female especially in water can drown her.

This is why so many of my drakes have gone down the road. I have either separated my drakes from my Hens or just gotten rid of them. It's not fair to the Hens to have them tormented by these drakes that are just like that by nature. That's just my feelings and I have hated to get rid of some of them because I liked them so much but my Hens deserved a better life than to be chased and tormented by them.
