Hey everyone! I just wanted to swing by this thread and say hello. I just got 6 lovely chicks from a friend (and thank you guys for identifying This is the first time I'm trying to raise my own flock. My son's father had chickens and for the few years we were together I learned how rewarding (and sometimes tricky!) having these feathered friends can be. He also taught me a lot about homesteading, which Is also something I aspire to do. I'm hoping to learn a lot here (already have!) so that I can have a decent-sized happy and healthy group of productive chickens. I am also interested in possibly getting involved in raising a pure breed, I'm not completely sure which one though, as I've found so many that interest me! (Maybe I'll post in another thread about that.)

Right now I have 6 Buff Orpingtons and what we think could be an Easter Egger. There may be two roosters in the mix, but I'm happy to say that as of right now, at around 3 months old, they are all doing great and are all pretty friendly with us and with each other.

I've never had Buff Orpingtons before, and they look like a lovely chicken, beautiful coloring and temperament. Any other BO owners that can share anything I may need or like to know please post in the comments here!

And remember, fowl language is ok in my book!!!!!

Thanks all!
Christina

Welcome to BYC, Christina. Glad you decided to join our flock. I raised Buff Orpingtons for years and they are a wonderful breed. They are very beautiful, cold hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter) made lap pets of them, and good layers of large, brown eggs. I think you'll be very happy with them. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Hi Christina, welcome to BYC!

Congratulations on getting your first flock. I've heard BO's can be broody so with your roosters around you could end up with a lot more little chicks running around. Since you're interested in self-sufficiency, you might like to check out this forum of BYC:

Nice to have you here, make yourself at home!

Very nice to meet your Christina, hope you will enjoy Backyard Chickens as much as we do. Buff orps, are generally beautiful docile birds and very popular. I think you will be very pleased with them.

If you want your birds ID'ed you can post photos here or at "what breed or gender is this." EE's are really a mix rather than a breed but, lay pastel colored eggs.

@drumstick diva that's exactly how I ID'd them! When I was with my son's dad he and his mom both had RIR (I got my chicks from her so I thought that's what I'd be getting!) But the more I looked at them I questioned the RIR thing. So I found the ever helpful (and fun) area of the forum for identifying and BO came up right away, and EE too.

@Frindizzle thanks! I love a good laugh and that little meme was too good to pass up!

Everyone else thanks for the warm welcomes!! Good to get to know you all!
