why do people call ducklings CHICKS? chicks are baby chickens..... DUCKLINGS are baby ducks..... kinda starting to drive me nuts

lol... I always have to check things I write on hear to make sure I dont refer to chooks.

Here in Australia the following applies.

Chicken - Unsexed baby chook
Pullet - young female chook
Hen - female chook older than 1 year

Cockerel Young male chook
Rooster Male chook over 1 year.

Duckling - baby duck
Duck - female Duck
Drake - male duck


Oh..also...there is a BIG difference between ducklings, goslings and cygnets.

I have ducklets. They went from ducklings to ducklets when they hit the gangly funny looking stage and even though they've started laying, there's no way they are all grown up, so they will basically forever be my ducklets.

A lot of people call any baby bird a chick. The word chick is actually appropriate and acceptable to use with most baby birds, especially songbirds and shorebirds.

By definition - "chook " is an slang Australian and New Zealand term used to describe domestic fowl or chickens as you guys all call them ( Gallus gallus domesticus.)

It came about from imitating the clucking sounds that they make.
