... how the heck do you candle a welsummer egg... tried to do it tonight and the light did not even penetrate the shell... guess I just have to wait and see

I hatched welsummer last year and yes, they are very hard to candle!!!

Sometimes I could see enough to see veining.

I guess you had a really, really strong flashlight it might work.

unfortunetly, it will be a guessing game for you!!

We use a mini mag light with the rubber anti-roll sleeve on the top that's been converted to LED. It's very bright, candles very well with that rubber cap slid off about a quarter of an inch, and can be had for under $20. Welsummer eggs candle OK. Marans, on the other hand, Oh my.
 
Ditto... I hatched Wellies and Marans last month. 220 Lumens LED. Wellies I could see some development and movement but veining was still hard to see. Marans I could only see air sac and dark area, or if the egg was clear.
