JustRambling About My Chicken Journey

Congrats on getting the coop.
You take care of yourself now you hear!

Be careful about giving them grass and such if they don't have access to grit.

Thank you! I forgot about grit, I guess I should find out if they have any. We aren't putting the shavings down yet so they can have access to the ground and grass...do we need to give them more grit then what they get from the ground? We are going to be by our local Running's store tomorrow, so we can pick some up if they need it. Not a whole lot I can do right now with this darn hip, but I'm excited to have them "Home" now. I will be able to see them everyday and gather the eggs about once a day. My husband and my boys will have to take care of water and food for now.

I couldn't get pictures of the chickens today, but I will try to get some this week sometime.

Look around and see if they have little rocks and such in their area.
Sometimes they are able to find enough grit on their own, but if your land doesn't have it then there is nothing for them to find.

A small bag of grit is only a few dollar....it wouldn't hurt to have some on hand just in case they aren't finding any on their own.
The last thing you want it do have to deal with an impacted crop or similar.

I didn't get to get a good look at the chickens. They were in a dog crate while setting up the coop and I peeked in at them, but I couldn't be standing out there for too long, so I went in before I could really see them. Hubby took the dog crate they were in and just "emptied" them into the coop, so I couldn't see them singly and get a good look. I threw in some grapes to welcome them to their new home, but it was a little dark in there, so couldn't see well.

I had my Post-op appointment for my hip surgery today. While we were up there, we went to Runnings (I stayed in the car) and got a bag of food for the chickens. The previous owners were feeding pellets, so that's what we got. We also got more pine shavings. My husband threw about 5 or 6 bales into the coop because we are doing the deep litter method. Getting chickens is something I've been wanting to do for a long time, but while my husband thought it would be good to get eggs, he wasn't all that interested in the chickens themselves. But, because he's the one setting everything up for them, I think he is getting a little fond of them. :D When he was putting the pine shavings in, I went out there and over heard him saying, ""It's ok girls, I'm just fixing this side up now, so you can go to the other side, go on, it's ok. Good girls!" :lau I love it!

We got our first egg today! :thumbsup Of course, I had to take a picture:

Isn't it beautiful? We aren't sure if it was laid by the Dark Brahma or the Black sex-link. We plan to crack it open tomorrow morning and see how it looks. :yesss:

Oh, so, I have decided not to name the chickens the names I mentioned at first. I think we are going to keep the white chicken's name, which is Bugs. The Dark Brahma was already named Henrietta, and I kind of like that, so we'll keep that. Hubby and one of my sons want to name the black sex-link Pita...like a chicken pita pocket.... Um....no. I said, "Her name is NOT Pita." So they started calling her "Not Pita". I wanted to name her Maxine. I like typical "old lady" names for chickens, (No offense to anyone with any of those names) so that's why I chose that, but they didn't like that. So, her name is still to be determined I guess. Maybe they will like the name Lucy? I kind of like that. Anyway....I guess that's for the next post. :)

Congratulations on your first egg!
Chickens do sneak up on a body like that. I've seen more than one person try to not like them and fail miserably.

@KikisGirls I finally got a better look at my girls. There was some concern about Henrietta when I posted the first pictures. But as you can see, she is fine. I did not use flash on these pictures, but the previous ones I did, so I think it was just the flash that caused her to look so pale.

This one was taken at a distance.

This one was taken close up. She is nice and pink. :thumbsup When I look at her with my eyes, she looks more like the second picture.
