We just had a little juvenile squirrel come up onto our deck, and he wouldn't go away! We tried shooing it with a broom, and it ended up following the broom. We got him out of the gate and shut it, so he just climbed in between the fence slats. I took him out to the woods a few times, and he just kept following me back. I ended up putting him in a box and taking him down to some woods next to the lake in our neighborhood. Hope he makes it, he sure was cute! Chickens couldn't figure out what the big deal was, but my dog would have taken it out for sure. She leaves the chickens alone, and is very respectful (meaning afraid) of the chickens, but she will chase, catch and kill very small furry things.

Hope it survives without it's mother. It still looks young. I had three young squirrels come visit one year, after a few hours they went home.

It ate some nut meats, and then bit my mother's boyfriend, so I hope he's old enough to be on his own. He followed me back several times when I took him out to the woods, so I went down to the lake and left him with the little cardboard box in the hollow stump of an old fallen down tree. There are a lot of little fellas his size out here now. Don't know why he decided he liked the people deck. I gave everyone STRICT instructions to NOT feed the wildlife except for filling the birdfeeders, and those aren't very close to the house. We certainly have no shortage of squirrels here!

He looks very young to me. If he returns, perhaps you could take him to a wildlife rehab facility. One that size might still have been on formula at the centre where I work.

Very cute!

Perhaps it was hand raised? I would say, really dont worry about the little cutie! I hand raised 3 baby squirrels when I was a teenager.. soo friendly and fun... and they do switch over to adult food pretty young.. mine were only about the length of my palm when they started on solids. And they were the same size as your cutie when I finally let them go outside (4 months)... let them go up a great big old oak tree.. and I came back regularly and left food out for them.. I saw them a couple times, staring down at me from the tree, but they caught on to being wild, I suppose, and wouldnt come close enough to touch anymore

. Hope that baby stays away from your house and your dog!

Edited to add - Our housemate/renter fellow cuts trees for a living.. and he came home with a baby squirell a few weeks back (reason I had to buy a second heat lamp LOL).. he was trying to keep it alive but the poor baby was weak and died

... I know he was pretty sad.. so hey! If your cutie keeps coming back, maybe you could pack him up and ship him down here? LOL

I agree with Squishy. It was probably hand raised and then let go too early. I have raised hundreds of squirrels as I was involved in wildlife rehab. I would have 50 or 60 babies 2x a year. If it comes back, please contact a wildlife rehabber in your area. Good luck.
