Here at Spring Creek Peafowl, we tried the Full Plume Feathering Feed from Kalmbach on a select number of our special breeders. The feed was given from the end of the laying season when the molt begins until the end of the year. We do not normally give our peacocks more than 1.5% calcium but for our evaluation, we had no choice, this feed has 4.5% calcium. Giving peacocks more than 1.5% is not recommended as it can be hard on their kidney. However, the visual results on some of the cocks were stunning!
We have tried some color enhancing feeds in the past with no effect but that is probably because the color is not on the feather but rather it is the composition if the feather that allows it to reflect the light spectrum. Healthy feathers create healthy colors.
This bird in particular is a mid range Spalding Black Shoulder and had good color already as shown in pics from 2022. We follow those pics with the updated pics from after feeding Kalmbach for one molting. Our normal feed is made at a local mill using the Purina Gamebird Starter Breeder with additional yeast and Bio-mos for improving gut health. It is a 28% whereas the Kalmbach is a 20%. Next year I plan to try the Masuri feed.
