I was thinking of getting some of these. Does anyone have any experience of keeping them? How high do the fences need to be? Do they have pouches for their young?

I totally need one of those..
Actually, they are happier when kept in groups. A group of kangagoos is called a "giggle."

I've never kept them, but I hear you do need high fencing. Particularly on the North and South sides, just in case they try to migrate.

Like a few other Australian oddities, they lay eggs and incubate them in pouches. They are unique in that they actually have several pouches, called baskets. When the eggs are laid, each goes into a separate basket. It is thought that the multiple pouch is an adaptation to the hopping gait, as the eggs in one pouch would bump together as the animal moves about, and probably get damaged. This is most likely the origin of the warning not to put all your eggs in one basket.

Thanks Bunnylady, that's great advice. I've met a few Australian oddities but whatever they had in their pouches it wasn't eggs.

My wife was hopping mad when I told her I wanted some kangagoos but, now you've explained that the eggs are already in baskets ready for collecting, she's much happier. She hasn't considered what might be an effective technique for taking eggs without suffering broken bones. I haven't yet mentioned that we need to have a giggle rather than just one.

Fencing is a bit of an issue. Where we have trees on the boundary we should be OK but the walls are only two metres high. Perhaps the answer is to buy some golf practice nets and mount them on the fences. The sight of a 'goo caught up in one after a failed escape attempt would give the neighbours a topic for the day!

That is the funniest thing ever. If they were real i would have had one yesterday!!!!
