Hello! So excited to have found this forum. I need info on the laws for backyard chickens in Kankakee il river view district.
Any advice on some good starting birds? I like brown eggs and the "Easter eggers"
Thanks for your time

! Pleased to have you aboard! My best advice for finding out local rules is to call City Hall. If you get the answer you don't like you can chat with locals in the MI link in the thread below to see what they have tried.

You can also peruse and post in this thread:

As to what birds to get, you'll get as many opinions are there are breeds. Obviously, the EE's will give you some colorful eggs. Brown layers are out there in abundance. You'll likely want a quieter breed...that can also cover a lot of birds. I like Red Stars and Black Stars (these are sex-linked birds meaning gender is determined at birth by color). Mine are friendly and great layers! Other really good and docile birds are Buff Orps and Speckled Sussex. But again, lots of choices. And who says you can get one of each of a bunch of breeds? Good luck and have fun!!

I too live in riverview and want chickens. I just went to the city of Kankakee website and it says no ,unless for areas designated for non conforming use http://www.citykankakee-il.gov/Municipal Code Book/Ch06.htm . I am gonna further investigate and see what I can turn up,it may take a while with work schedule though. let me know if u come up with something please.

Great thanks Jason176. I'm not sure what tht might mean or who to clarify the terms with. But will keep trying.

I am wondering if you have found out any more information about having chickens in the Riverview area of Kankakee. We are looking to buy a house in that neighborhood and would love to have chickens! We are coming from Chicago and have had chickens in our yard here.

Thanks!

Have you found out any more information on how Kankakee feels about chickens?! We are moving to Riverview next week and would love to have chickens again...

Thanks!
