It's a sad day here on the ranch. My only RIR Karen died yesterday. It's the first chicken I've lost. I just finished burring her. Then I cleaned out the coop and racked everything out of the run, and put in new pine shavings everywhere, coop, nestboxes, and run. I can't figure out what happened, she was fine yesterday morning, and the day before I got 8 eggs from 8 chickens. My wife found her laying dead yesterday evening. The only sign of anything wrong were some runny light brown poop here and there. She was my first hen to lay, and I'll will miss her. I've spent some time with the other girls this morning, and everybody seems to be doing fine. They are all only about 9 months old. I guess it's just a fluk. I don't know. I just hope all the other girls will be alright. I also changed their water supply. I can't think of anything else I can do. I'll miss you Karen R.I.P.

I too just loss very suddenly my 3 year old red star. She was fine the day before got an egg and then the next morning I saw her in the coop alive came home from piano that afternoon and she was dead and stiff. HAve no idea what killed her and she sshowed no signs at all of any problems. I did the same thing, burried her and raked out the coop. Kept an eye on the other two. Stumped myself.
