Hi, I've had my first 8 chickens for 1 year. They are great and produce very well. I tried to introduce 6 new chickens this spring and that did not go well at all...one hung herself on the fence, two my dog got to and the last three just ran away. I was very disheartened by the whole thing.
We have a small farmette in Virginia. We have 2 dogs, 4 cats, 2 finches, 2 honey bee hives and the 8 hens. I am an LPN. I love to hand sew, applique, quilt. I also would like to own a horse again.

Hi Kathleen and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. Don't get disheartened - try again in spring, but maybe read through the links below to organise your set-up appropriately:

More generally, here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

:welcome

Introducing new birds to an existing flock can be a bit of work but it can be done. You've been given some excellent links to check out, hope they make your next try successful!

Hi Kathleen and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've joined our little flock:ya So sorry about your chicks:hugs I wait until mine are about 8-10 weeks (I judge by size) and then use the look don't touch method to add new kids to the flock.
