Greetings,
I've been raising chickens for over a year, the most I've had at one time is 3(RIP Coco, Hershey, and Freckles).
Right now, I only have 2: One is a pullet (Easter Egger named Raven), the other is a rooster (Rhode Island Red named Edith).
My favorite part of raising chickens is the bonding and companionship, having backyard chickens is the only reason I have to go out in the backyard. My other hobbies are playing video games and drawing digitally. The only other person that helps with the chickens is my mother. My sister also has 2 cats: a black cat named Obie, and an orange cat named Honey (They are inside cats). I found this site through google searches and decided to make an account because of Edith (13 weeks old, started crowing, can't keep him). Got them at the local feed store and of course one turns out to be a rooster, it happened last time too when I got Freckles and Nugget (the other rooster we gave away). Then we had to get Coco and Hershey (Both Chocolate Orpingtons) so Freckles (Silver-laced Wyandotte) wouldn't be lonely (We didn't introduce them properly). Coco didn't survive the summer we got her (Heat stress), Hershey lasted a year but not second summer (Heat stress after laying egg), then we got the 2 chicks (Raven and Edith) but Freckles died 2 weeks before she was supposed to meet them (Mystery but probably heat stress). We have learned from our mistakes and upgraded our defenses against the summer heat (Moved coop closer to house, tarp to block all direct sunlight, got a portable misting fan, and regular supply of ice water/concrete brick that's been freezing in the freezer overnight that they can stand on). I mourn the loss of my chickens and regret the fact that it took their deaths for these changes to be made. I will not be making the same mistakes again and look forward to raising a happy, healthy, long-living flock of chickens. (Sorry for the mini essay, lol)

Hi! I enjoyed reading your intro! Losing chickens is never easy, but it is good you are learning, improving and moving onward and upward! It's a bummer you got some surprise cockerels, but I guess that comes with the chicken-keeping territory as well.

We are very happy to have you here and glad you joined! Welcome to BackYard Chickens!

Greetings & Salutations. Welcome.

As others have written, it is difficult when we lose our chickens. It is good that you have learned and are learning. We are here for your, ask questions.

In what area are you? country? state?

This is a wonderful site on which to Learn and enjoy. We are pleased to have you in the community.
