Even if you do everything right you can still have fish die over winter. It's very stressful to them. I don't necessarily know everything about leaving them out during the winter. I started to read up on it and it sounded iffy here in Wisconsin. If I didn't have my big tank I would probably keep them in a cow tank in the basement over winter. I hate not knowing how my fish are doing.

I've had my big fish since 2003, so I have gotten a bit attached to them.

I don't want to talk you out of a pond, definitely do some reading on it. Some of the folks on your pond thread I think are further south than you and me. What plant zone are you in? 4 or 5?

Plus a bigger tank is way cheaper than a big pond for fish, so again not talking you out of it. There's a whole balancing act with a pond between fish, and plants and filtration. If you get it wrong you end up with an algae filled mess. Filters need constant maintenance, plants too. Many people put in a small pond than become disenchanted with it, and it's constant maintenance.

My pond is smaller and I manage it like an aquarium with water changes and filter rinsing every few days. I'm always relieved to shut it down in the fall.

Hmm, it definitely sounds like a lot of work but I’m not entirely sure that a tank would be cheaper because the large tanks are really expensive without even adding the filter but idk. Unless I maybe looked on Craigslist or something. But I guess ponds are probably hundreds or thousands.

But yeah, I think a lot of them are further south or at least in warmer areas like California or Texas.

And neither, I’m 6b haha but the state varies.

Sorry, might be hard to see in thumbnail. Here’s full size. But the state varies from 5a out in Western Mass and the northern part of the state to 7b on the Cape and Islands.

:D aw he's so cute.
Finally changed the filter and water in the fish tank today. Desperately needed it. It was pretty low and evaporated for a while cause I couldn't get to the tank. Finally cleared some stuff and did it today. Much happier. And I was able to get some new pics. They're huge now. I will post then and now. They've come a long way since the teeny little Petco fish that barely filled the tank lol they're like little sharks now.

:D sooo sorry ive had a really long weekend. I havent been home except for sleep. Ill be away all day today too then life should go back to normal. Ihave 7 chicks now and im taking them on a 3 hour drive later today.
:frow Hi Kelsey and Rose and Boxer mom!
Kel how is your dog doing?
:D hi Kiki. I didnt knw you had a pup. Ao cute!

LOL true! Might not be room for us if we’re not careful. :lau And aww are you gonna get more?

Yeah, some get to like 2 or 3 feet, right? That’s massive and I’d have to have a pretty big pond. But some people were saying they have great personalities. Plus they have cool colors. Idk.

Well, some said they just leave everything running but that doesn't sound too safe to me but then I found this tonight and it sounds like a great solution and it’s pretty cheap. Plus the reviews are great and most say it’s the best of every one they’ve tried. So I’m thinking I might give it a shot. If it doesn’t work, I can always bring them inside or just go hack a hole out lol they just need a hole for gas exchange, right? And not feeding in winter.

Hi!! :D

Gator is doing pretty well lately but he has good days and bad days. He lost like all his hair a couple months ago. Started in a patch so went to vet and was on antibiotics but it kept getting worse. He looked very patchy for a while as he lost all undercoat and then his undercoat turned brown so he had brown ugly undercoat clumps all over. But once he lost the undercoat (helped by us brushing and pulling it out) and was black again he looked better. Have given him numerous bathes and it’s starting to grow back somewhat so doesn’t look as bad now, although still extremely short and some scabs and bites on his skin from the mosquitos. Anyway, long story short, latest development is he got hair loss/crusty around his eye and major goop so vet put him on an antibiotic eye ointment. Just got it yesterday and it actually seems to be helping already and his eye isn’t all dry/crusty anymore. I was paranoid it was serious but with how fast it cleared up idk. He is also back on the steroids which is why I said he is better because he has a strong appetite and lots of energy and wanting to play, etc. but at the same time, I know that is largely because of the steroids and off of them he isn’t as great plus he has been having lots of trouble getting in the car and his myositis (Masticatory muscle myositis (MMM) is getting worse to the point where he now has no cheeks either and is down to bone on the top of the head/extremely prominent crown, eyes continue to sink deeper and deeper, already very sunken, and I think he’s going deaf, so idk how long we will be able to keep the steroids going or how much longer he has. It’s hard because he seems to still be full of energy and life, especially on the steroids, and with the supplements I’ve been giving him, but then you see him off the steroids and it’s like a different dog. And if he goes blind and deaf, that’s no life. I’m thinking of getting a second opinion from another vet though to see if there’s anything else that can be done but I think it might be too late. I kind of wish we had gone to another vet sooner but I’m not sure we could have stopped it anyway.

Sorry for the novel and to get all depressing, could’ve just said he’s fine and/or kept it short lol
Poor pup, how old is he?
Does the whole pond have to be thawed or just a whole for air? Wouldn’t just the top few inches freeze? And wait whatis winter kill? Might bring them inside in winter after all haha but yes I am in Massachusetts.

Aww that’s sad. :(

We have herons here I think but we have tons of marsh, rivers, ocean, ponds, etc. around so they mostly stay near the water

Oh i thought MA was Maine. But Massachusetts isnt that far either. :p

Thank you but he is a she :p Luna.

And right!? They look even bigger in person lol I love watching them too though and they have their own personalities.

No, no, don't be sorry! I just figured I'd tag since you said you don't always get post notifications lately. :) have fun!

He's only 6 :( but he's a large/giant breed, Black Lab/Great Pyrenees mix.

Oh and the worst part/what I think will be the determining factor is he can't even do his job anymore or barely. He's a house pet but has always taken it upon himself to protect the chickens and warn of predators despite not getting them until he was 3, as well as alerting to people on the property, etc. But now sometimes he doesn't even hear or know predators are out there or people, even delivery trucks, are on the property which is sad. He notices if he's outside or we wake him up or notices on his own too late or occassionally on time but he misses a lot. And he always considered that his job so I think it makes him sad he's failing and/or scared cause he can't hear and wants to be close all the time.

Nope, that's ME. :p

But that's true. I was wondering why you said we were neighbors though lol figured you were in another New England state at first.

You are much warmer than I though. So maybe don't listen to me about ponds.

Maybe I could use a stock tank for winter, that might be cheaper than the equivalent size fish tank. But idk if the metal would be toxic to the fish?

Okay... shipping cost not so perfect. :lau

Did find this one on Craigslist. Might be better. Same size and could use cash. And no shipping cost.

A good plastic stock tank would work well if you decide to go that route. People have also kept them in Rubbermaid tubs, and even garbage cans. With your climate it may be easier than I was thinking to leave them out. We freeze solid here, with our frost depth being 4-6 feet down depending on the year.

Yeah, our frost depth is only like 3 feet here haha

I might go get that one from Craigslist
