Keene, NH Sun. June 14th, 2009 Chickenstock @ Agway

In my last order, i ordered more than i needed for myself. 1) i wanted to make sure i still had what i wanted even if i lost a couple. 2) i figured there are people out there willing to buy just a few chicks---they don't want to have to get 25 from the hatchery. So far, most of my extras are spoken for.

that i'll sell the rest.

Dave had a great idea---look back thru posts to see what people might be looking for....

i also think hatchery sexed pullets are easier to sell than straight-run, because people like knowing they are getting hens rather than roos. i know i have passed on buying some chicks at swaps because the people did not know if the chicks were boys or girls.
just my 2 cents!

Good point. Because I also have searched for the person selling the pullets instead of straight runs at a swap before.

I'll look through the tread and see, also. I'm thinking that I should also add some typical breeds that the random swap attender (vs seller/swapper) would be interested in. I'll already have about 10 RIRs, so maybe some Orpingtons or another winter hardy breed.

yeah, i think some good brown egg layers are always popular. I got some extra barred rocks, and they are already spoken for. I have barred rocks and buff orpintons in my own flock---everyone i know who has them says they are such great birds. Then i got some of various colored egg layers---those are fun for kids, but often the hatcheries sell out of the chicks fast! I sold my 2 extra EE's to a friend last week.

I was actually sitting here contemplating getting EEs and Orps as the extras LOL. I had some EEs to hatch in time, but the PO scrambled them. And I think I'm going to bring my 4 silkies to sell. I guess I'm not as much of a fan of them as I thought I was. They run around and annoy my Orpingtons.

Maybe I'd like the ones I hatched, as I can give them "hand time" instead of getting them at 4 or 5 weeks old, having only been in an outside brooder in the cold (too cold!), not handled, and very skittish.

Uuughhhg!! I'm sooo very bummed... I've been planning on going to this swap from the beginning, and I just recently realized that I've booked a camping trip that very same weekend! I'll be at Savoy campground, about 1 1/2hr away and don't think I can swing doing both things. If we check out early enough (ha!) I'd have to drive all the way home to get the chicks I want to sell then drive back up to Keene! Oh, I don't know what to do!! Not only do I want to sell/buy birds, but I really want to see MM Oakes and get some more soap and other goodies.

Anyone have any creative ideas for me?

best wishes!

well, that would be easiest, but we're going with a few other families with same age kids, so not an option at this point.. my kids would not be happy. Maybe I'll leave early by myself, or we can just go there without my birds to sell I suppose. I don't know yet.

how old are your silkies? and what color?

My silkies are white and about 8 weeks old, I think.

They are super cute. I had intended to give them their own space, but I have some Sussex on the way so I'd like to just focus on those and let them have that space. I think I'm just spoiled by my Orps since I got them at a couple days old and cuddled them a ton. I wasn't able to do that with the Silkies. I bet they'll come around, it's just that I think I'd like to have other breeds.

I may be selling three or four. One is a little bugger named Snowball who the kids just adore... I may be forced to keep Snowball to give company to the Showgirl that my daughter is begging for.

Get up very early in the morning, leave note: will be back in time for break down, gone to Keene.
Run home collect chicks and such, go to swap sell and buy what you need, go back to camp ground, break down go home feeling all warm and fuzzy.
