I have recently decided to keep a roo, at least for a little while, to see how he works out in my new flock. I have 12 hens with him of various breeds. I was just reading some posts about keeping roos, and it occurred to me: as he matures and starts mating with the hens, I have like 6 different breeds of hens. Is this going to get messy? I mean, none of the hens are a Welly like him, and a couple of them are bantams. I am not necessarily interested in him fertilizing eggs, I just want to have him around as a protector and for my own amusement. Is this a bad idea?

The only thing a rooster cares about a hen is whether he can mate with her.

Trust me, he won't mind a multi-breed harem one bit.
