Keeping Chickens Free Range

X2 Lol!

This is why my two rescued greyhounds are NEVER allowed near my chickens. I figure that when you combine their strong innate instinct to chase moving objects with the conditioning they got when they were being trained for the track, getting them reconditioned not to chase and kill the chickens is a losing proposition and not worth the risk.

For all of you people that free range your birds:
How many do you keep per acre? I have been looking around for answers to this question. They are extremely varied, and often unrealistic. I do not mean to get all of their food from free ranging, but to have a sustainable number for the plants to not suffer from nitrogen build-up and to have a semi-safe garden.

Free range chickens and a safe garden, that's a good one!!!

I had about 150 birds this summer I have 13 acres, The birds seemed to stay in a 2 acre area, they did not de-nude the area, but ticks and bugs were hard to find. I did feed them besides free ranging. I have a 6 acre field of grain and weed seeds they refused to even venture into.

MY birds preferred the front steps, the area right next to the coop, and the tomatoes with the occasional bean salad.
