Keeping Chickens Free Range

Buzzards are also known, in various parts of the country, as chicken hawks or chicken buzzards. The can and will attack small living animals. They will also eat dead animals. We have "chicken hawks" by the dozens here in West Texas. So far we have had no loss to them but they have come down to about 4 feet above ground before our dogs chased them off.

Thnx for the info......

I think that must be a regional thing. Up here a "chicken hawk" is a red tail hawk.

Vultures are called turkey Vultures whether they are one or not.

I did not remember they would kill their own food, but when you mentioned it I remember hearing that years ago.

Thanks for that , I will have to watch more closely for them.

Does anyone know if they are protected like BoP are?

And here, there's no such thing as a chicken hawk. BoP are only called chicken hawks by folks who don't know the true name of the hawk in question. I know a hawk when I see one, but have been told in no uncertain terms by folks who can id a hawk on the wing simply by it's profile... "There's no such thing as a chicken hawk."

This is true, a real bird fanatic will go completely ape if you say you saw a chicken hawk..

I am not going to be able to let my chooks free range for a while!!! Our dog killed nearly about 130 chickens...she is still a opuoy and we are sending her to obediant school (there they alos train not to eat other pets e.g chickens)! So when she is a lil older they are going to be allowed to free range again!!!
