Keeping Chickens Free Range

That sounds right to me....my hubbie and father in law do all the canning. I used to do some of it....but they like it and I finally let them take it over completely. The chickens are mine and I feed them and all the dogs and the cat. I enjoy it...but I want to go visit family for about a month so I need to negotiate with the grands and see if I can get them to take over for a while.
One of the feed store pullets is a he. I may keep him.
I think I am going to have to read up on butchering chickens ...hubbies is backing out. They butcher hogs every year but he doesn't want to kill the chickens. What is the best age? I have some 4 month olds I need to do something with...Is that old enough?

They are not very big....but I could use them for bone broth and soup....I don't think I would mind eating the meat but the killing part I don't know about.

Killing them requires adult beverages both before and after the event.....

It is hard to I find it easier when I tell myself meat buy in the store never had a good day outside like mine do/did and buying meat butchered by someone else is hiring a cold blooded killer. Doing it myself is living like God intended killing only what need for food. I take comfort in the humane way it ends and the good life they had. I also thank bird for it's sacrifice. I know it is corny but it helps me.

My drink of choice is vodka mix, Schnapps or hard lemonade.....

I agree it's the way intended and not paying someone else and they have had a decent life. I have thought of all those things. Lol....I don't drink so not sure what I can do about that part. But I just thought of a couple up the mountain from us....I bet they can show me exactly how to do this. Might pay them a visit this week. It's not only the doing but the details of doing it, too. And ill read thru that thread here, too. Oh there used to be some alcohol here but I put vanilla beans in it.

I bet they would show you country people like to help teach others how to do things...

When I wrote the post with the booze in it, I said to meself" Self watch now she will be a tea totaler."....

I am not a huge drinker, but I have to admit and cannot lie, I do have a drink before, after and during camp day. It is such a hard job for me to do, and I need all the mental crutches I can get..

I hope I did not offend you.

I do this too. I don't think it's corny at all. People are so disconnected from their food supply.

Lol....you certainly did NOT offend me and if I did partake that would be a good time. Mostly my choice not to drink and partly a carb thing.....carbs of any kind except from veggies can be bad for me. And yes, I'm hoping they will want to share their knowledge. Not sure why my hubbie doesn't want to do it as he butchers the hogs. Maybe the thought of all those feathers.

So guess what? Hubby came home earlier and said he knows someone who will take my extra birds. So now I need advice on a different question. They need to leave here early Tuesday morning. I can borrow a chicken crate from my father in law. Should I put them in the crate on Monday night or Tuesday morning?
thank you.... I do not have lap chickens so catching them will not be easy.....unless there is a trick. I think I read that you can catch them after dark....how long after?

I know my grandparents had chickens and that they ate some of them. I can remember going outside with my first cousin and she got a chicken for dinner. But I was pretty young and I don't remember any of the details. I know it a natural part of the circle of life. I just have to get it together because even tho someone is taking these chickens there will be more.....did I say my little phoenix is sitting on eleven eggs right now?
