Keeping Chickens Free Range

Got here today and didn't see any chickens, my heart sank. I get out of the truck and walk over to the coop.... the pop door is closed, there are 5 girls in the coop, something hunkered down in the corner of the poop board and the pop door is closed! It is 3pm so clearly it has been closed all day, which means that CAT in the corner has been in there since at least yesterday. Guess it is time to charge the battery! Good news is all the girls are back. I guess I need to go back to my diary thread and see when I put in the pop door so I know how long the battery will last and change it BEFORE it holds everyone hostage. They got a few hours of range time and I just manually closed the door, sans cat. I'll charge the battery overnight and mark on the calendar when it needs to change next. :) I still need to figure out how to keep them in our yard but i'm glad they are back and I have eggs for breakfast in the am.

So what happened to the cat? We won't tell your neighbors.

This is the second time I've had a problem cat in captivity and I'll be darned if they are not both free now. I was so concerned about the stupid cat hurting one of the girls in its panic I just wanted it OUT. My hubs was laughing at the cat rocketing down the fence line, he didn't realize it had been locked in the coop. The other time was at my city house, we have a feral cat problem. I hear my dogs going nuts barking at the door into the back yard. I see a flash of white so I let them out thinking they will chase the cat over the fence and problem solved, right? That darn cat could get in but couldn't get out so it just ricochet around the back yard bouncing off of fence, house and landscaping then just took a flying leap into the pool. Who knew cats could swim. So I get the pool net and what do I do? Do I push the cat down? Noooooo, never crossed my mind. I scoop the cat up and dump it over the fence thinking it will turn into a Popsicle and I'll have one less feral cat to deal with. That danged cat lived and now hangs out under my office window. My husband said he told all his cat friends that the nut at the end of the street likes cats.
