Keeping Chickens Free Range

Big Dog is only threatening looking.....she is a 7 yo Great Dane.....she barks occassionly and is big. I know some said on one of the threads that they are just scavengers but if they are hungry enough.......
Grandson number 3 scouted around and he brought back what sure enough looked like (pretty old) chicken feet. He asked if one of mine was missing....but I have not had a missing one since I got them. He found them in the neighbors horse field. No one else on our side of the road has chickens....but a couple people on the other side have them.

Hmmm..... not sure about eating buzzard stew....but then I saw it called for chicken....might be worth trying. I would have to trade the brown rice for white. I try not to eat food with hulls....not in my food plan which is the AIP if anyone is interested. ;)

The good thing is birds of prey do not know if a dog is a marshmallow or not. Both my dogs are marshmallows, I tell family, if a burglar comes here, my youngest dog would show there all the good stuff is.

I am actually thinking of trying that recipe. I like the idea of chicken in pumpkin.

It will be 19 months before I try it. In the fall I am trying to figure out ways to use pumpkins. I grow them mainly for grandkid's jack-o-laterns the rest we eat or the chickens do, mainly the chickens.

I refuse to buy a pumpkin. I bet they would be costly if you could even find them this time of year.

I don't think I gave the chickens pumpkins last fall (that is when I got my first chickens). But I did get to give them watermelon which they are crazy about....they also love any protein that I have given them...meat, cheese and they like BOSS. But I am puzzled by the fact that they ignore so many things....like cabbage for one. I gave them spinach leaves once......I don't think they even looked at it. Apples they half heartedly eat.....I guess I don't understand why they are different than most chickens.....ive seen them ignore grapes and blueberries too. They did eat cooked October beans yesterday. Lowcarb chickens?

Maybe they have seen or heard stories about what happens to chubby little chickens?

Yeah, i've had that issue lately also. Bread and bread stuffs soaked in warm water are okay. The Leghorn, pecking at ANYTHING within reach when I'm feeding the dogs a bit of wet food, OH, YEAH! I've been dropping bits for them, just to keep them OUT of the dog's dishes. Tons of scratch STILL scattered....Me thinks they're spoiled......

I think my girls have gotten sloppy about where they are supposed to lay their eggs. When I got out to the country Friday I only had 3 eggs. I hunted around for a nest somewhere but couldn't find one. I did see some broken egg shells by our trailer when we went to leave. I'm guessing they are laying wherever is convenient rather than something stealing eggs and carrying them away to eat away from the coop.

Would locking them in for a day or two be enough to remind them where they are supposed to lay?
