Keeping chickens on wire

Is it bad to keep chickens on a wire floor instead of the ground. I know that ducks can be kept on wire, but what about chickens?

We have 3 extra roos in wire floored rabbit hutches right now. The floors are 1/2" hardware cloth. I was worried that the wire could get rough on their feet so I'm using thick layers of pine shavings in one hutch and thick layer of hay in the other two. The boys' feet are just fine!
