i hand raised our first dozen chicks, now they are brooding their own chicks, and i dont have time to help, but am wondering about the feed.layena.i will give the chicks starter at first, i can of course keep the chicks out of the feed for awhile, but i remember the first chicks were able to fly to small heights in no time, should i put them ALL on something like flockraiser?

I also feed my mommas chick starter, but be sure to offer her free choice oyster shell for the calcium. If you feed medicated chick starter, some people recommend disposing of the eggs. I have eaten them, and it has never bothered me.

You simply offer everyone the same feed and not worry about it.

Starter/Grower/Flock Raiser, etc. In other words, anything but layer. The layer has the high calcium blended in, which the little ones do not need.
All feed has calcium, as a rule, but the high content mixed into layer is too much for non laying birds.

thanks everyone for the info,no im not using the medicated i am letting them hatch eggs because it is winter i think the production will be down anyway.so the flock raiser!do you think the starter would be a better choice for all of them

I was told to switch back to medicated chick feed and when the girls got to 20 weeks just throw down some calcium source to supplement the older girls.
