I had a 2 legged pest in my coop in the form of my great granddaughter! I thought I had the doors child proof, at least for chilcren her age, but she is a crafty one, and very busy.

She got in when I was not home (Other adults were in charge). When I got home they were looking for her. I saw her exit the coop.

I found the cat carrier in the coop and, in her own words, she was "throwing chicks in the cat cage." I think that was her intent but I don't think she was able to catch any. I feel lucky that she didn't step on one while she was chasing them down.

The 100 w. light bulb in the brooder was draped over a half wall in the coop. The gate to the run was unlocked (dogs could have gotten in easily) Yikes! She is an active one, and quick!

All the chickens survived uninjured, although I think they were probably terrified.

In my quest to child proof the coop and run I have now purchased combination locks. This should do it unless she decides to take down chicken wire. She is very smart and into everything, but we all love her.

Oh, goodness, I have grandkids from 8 to 18, no great ones yet. Chickens are such a great learning experience for them. Too bad the adults are not so sensible. Mine, even the older ones, are not allowed in the coop without supervision, and they obey this (well, the 18 year old would be, but he just went to Army basic training.)

My friends little girl was very excited to see her grand parents free range chicks and as only a three and a half year old can do she said "mommy look" and stepped on one:(. poor thing didn't stand a chance. You live, you learn and hope there isn't too much damage along the way;)
