Keeping happy neighbors

I went over to my closest neighbor and asked him if he minded if I got a rooster. I've already brought him baked goods and as soon as my girls get geared up, I'll be bringing over eggs.

Heck, the turkey I got may end up being for him. He said he'd be happy to slaughter anything.

My neighbor up the mountain is now taking 4 of my pullets.

We are fellow goat herders. It is my fault she got two more goats last week.

Baby, I can suck up!

Don't mean to veer off-topic, but I have a question about flies...

I noticed that flies were zipping into the coop through the girls' hatch and the air vents in the top yesterday, but that they were not flying out.

Is it possible to eat too many flies?

Back to the topic, be a good neighbor and it shouldn't be a huge issue.

It's a risky venture where I live. The city code says ixnay on the chickens, but then lays down instructions for keeping them. I have nosy neighbors on one side, but compared to the very loud critters in the neighborhood, my girls are really small potatoes. I plan to bribe with eggs when they're old enough to start laying.

People don't realize they're not allowed here, clearly, because there are lots in my neighborhood, including roosters a few blocks away. And I get the impression that the code isn't enforced very often.

Great idea about growing flowers to make the area look good! I was thinking about that...

- as said by others this is a great forum and you really learn a lot. I would say depending on how friendly you are with the neighbors - have them over to meet the "girls". I would also handle the chicks so they think of you as their mommy - it is so much fun to take them out into the garden and they will stick right by you and not wonder off. If my girls get just even a little too far away - they come running! I also agree keeping things really clean and check in with the neighbor once in a while to make sure they are OK with noise, smells or anything that may be bothering them, and if so, correct it.
