Keeping my chicks warm. PLEASE HELP!

LOL...seems we have more questions than answers!! New 2 Chooks, yes, simply move the bulb further away...I think that's easier than going lower wattage, but either way would work.

Atlargeintheworld...sounds like your chicks are comfortable with the temp., so I don't think I'd worry about it. It would be different if you said they were all huddled under the lamp. Then I would say "not warm enough!!"

Now I have a question. My chicks are almost feathered out (@ 4 weeks) I probably have a week to go for full feathers. The suggestion of lowering the temps by 5 degrees always seem to end at 75 degrees or so, "at which time they should be fully feathered out" is always what I read.
Well...that's fine, but then what??? It's in the 60s here during the day, but drops into the 40s at night. If they're feathered out, but still little, is there a temp. that it too low????? I was planning on keeping a heat lamp out in the coop for a while, but I know they need to get used to cooler/colder temps. I'm a little lost on the steps when they're at this age... I may post this...

i love that we are the blind leading the blind! it's wonderful to be learning along with others.

teach, from what i've read/ experienced with my great-grandmother's chickens when i was young, once they are feathered out you really just want to make sure they have heat during the night unless it's unduly cold during the day. i saw somewhere on here that you could make a little floor heater out of a cookie tin so that they could huddle around it but it didn't light the place up. maybe check into that.

It is actually nice to know that others worry about "doing it right" too...

Take care, WyGirl, these are Fahrenheit degrees not Celsius.

90 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale is 32.222... on the Celsius scale. And 5 degrees of difference on the Fahrenheit scale is 2.778 degrees on the Celsius scale.

As CheerfulHeart2 said,

Remember to watch the chick's to see if they act hot or cold. Hot chick get far away from the light, cold ones huddle under it. From what I have read, the ideal is to see them congregating somewhere in between just udner the light and the outside edge of the box...that means they can move in to get warming or out to get cooler as needed.

and that doesn't need conversion from one temperature scale to another.
