Keeping Quail with chickens.

my quail used to live in harmeny with a silkie and a hybrid hen, however she was unusually getil for a hen! but the real thing you need to look out for is not the cold but rats and squrills! they are a seriose danjer to quail in the cold months when they get desperiate for food and had killed many of my quail untill the rats and squarils had to be destroyed themselves.

I asked the same question and took my chances. I have chukars and a variety of quail in my new York coop. The bob white never go into the coop so we covered the run ( top and sides with ventilation holes) and all quail have survived the toughest part of this winter. I even have a pair of gambel quail. I did have a hen that would eat baby chicks and so naturally she killed and ate a quail. I got rid of her and all is harmonious now. My run now looks like an aviary more than a chicken run!
Generally it is up to you to decide to try. It will all depend on your chickens. If you know they are good with chicks i would bet they will do ok.
As far as disease I have not found any quail sick or dead yet...in the past year that I have had them together ( other than the ones killed ny that mean old hen).

-20 below and my Coturnix do great. I have them on deep litter in the winter in a fabric greenhouse with windows rolled up. The water does not freeze till its 10 degrees. I have bins turned upside down for them to cuddle under and a lightbulb for the dark days. But not at night to worried about fire.

Hi,

I know that this is a common question, but all the responses seem to be people saying "Yes, I've had no problems" or "No, never keep quail with chickens because disease!". My question is, what disease(s) is/are the problem?

I've seen infectious coryza (Avibacterium paragallinarum, aka Haemophilus paragallinarum, aka Haemophilus gallinarum), mentioned, which mainly affects chickens but can affect Japanese quail. Are there other diseases that are specifically dangerous to quail and spread by chickens?

(I understand that the chickens, being bigger, may pick on and bully the quail, and even kill them. My question is specifically about diseases.)

Cheers :)

Maybe I should just start a new thread for this question, but I feel like it may be a little redundant with all of the applicable info above, so I'm just adding it on.

I currently have 5 Jumbo Coturnix Quail. I want to add on just one Araucana chicken hen. My plan is to hatch the chicken and raise her from birth with the quail. In doing this I'm hoping for a few things. #1 I'm hoping she will feel like she is part of the flock, so she won't be lonely, as she will be the only chicken. #2 I'm hoping that she won't peck the quail since they will be so much smaller than her once she is grown. And, #3, I'm hoping that if I can disinfect the eggs and incubator properly that there won't be any threat of coryza spreading to my quail.

Am I crazy to even try this? And, am I correct in my thinking I can beat all the odds by hatching the chicken and raising it with the quail? Input please!
