Keeping snakes out

I just recently converted a large, open stall in our barn into a chicken coop. I put chicken wire from top to bottom and netting over the top which is about 7 feet high. Needless to say, 2 rat snakes got in and took out half of my flock. I realize the wire mesh netting is an ideal option, but it's so expensive! Is there anything else cheaper I could use to keep snakes out? My coop is about 20x20x7.

I have had a couple of rat snakes get into a coop but they didn't bother the eggs or birds. I have large fowl. I have electric wires around my coops and pens and a couple of snakes attempted to go through the fence and crosses the electric wire and were electrocuted.
@aart's link may help.
