Keeping steel waterer clean

With this summer heat, it seems like the galvanized steel 5-gallon waterer gets a lot of gunk in it after just a few days. Any trick to keeping the waterer cleaner for longer? Is it safe to add a drop or two of bleach to the water?

How often do you scrub and clean your waterer to keep the water healthy for the chickens?

I have always added about a cap full of clorox regular bleach to my waterers & a splash to my duck pools ..it keeps the slime away longer & helps the green algae from growing in the pools after a day
