Keeping the chicks out of gardens?

My birds are all LF and not too interested in using their wings for anything but fanning themselves when it's hot. I put a 4' welded wire fence around my veggie garden last year, with bird netting over the top. This year I'm going to raise the bird netting to about 6' so I can get in easily to care for everything and keep the weeds out. Right now I leave the gate open so they can get in and do some tilling and fertilizing for me.
