Keeping the drinking water clean

I have a heated metal waterer for my chickens that holds @ 5 gallons, I bought a bag at TSC that was supposed to help keep the water clean. the problem is this, the water smells terrible and doesnt look very good is that normal. BY the way I have 6 chickens and 2 ducks.

Is it on the ground? Are they kicking/scratching any dirt/bedding/droppings into the water?

Raise it up off the ground. Hang it or put it up on bricks or cement blocks. That should stop 99% of the mess.

I have mine on a cement block and keeps the water pretty clean. I still change it out every few days.
