Keeping the hens warm???

If you had never laid straw down to begin with they would be frolicking in the snow still. but now that they come to expect it, well you know the rest of the story.

alan, after many years of dealing with hard water, (-30 in winter) I have come up with a system on my page that seems to work pretty well. I have power in my coop though. You can see what we came up with in my page. Fairly cheap, easy to do, and not horribly complicated. Semi-automatic also.

Well, dogs are domesticated and bred for very specific looks in mind so they likely dont have the protective warmth that a chicken would have so that comparison doesnt work. Some dogs (like Huskies) do but most dont as a result of centuries of specific breeding.

Basically, you put your dog outside all day in -20F, its abuse and pretty sick...but a chicken is likely okay as long as it has a dry, wind free coop to hide in.

They did go out this morning in it,but it was the newbies that went first then the older ones from last year. Will try going without straw and see how it works because its an awful mess in the spring to clean up and the ground stays frozen under the straw for a long time
