keeping them in feed

I know there are several feeders out there that keep feed in front of the flock all the time. Is that the best way? just let them eat as much as they want when ever they want?

Unless they are Meaties. Meaties will eat till they explode. Layers will eat what they need. Kind of like cats.

I keep my food and water in the run, and take the food into the garage at night, covered.

I keep food/water out at all times. Haven't had mice problems yet, but if so, I will also put food inside after dark.
