Keeping Water from Freezing with No Power

I just got 6 new chicks about a month ago. I would like to keep them at our pasture where we have our horses, but there is no power. While this is not a problem now, I know their water will freeze during the Utah winter. I’m just trying to be prepared and get some tips and advice. Thanks!

Old style, Amish type, no electricity method:

dig a hole, put fresh manure in hole. Cover with some dirt, place water bucket in hole. Heat from decomposing manure provides heat. should last for a few months. This is same concept behind “hot frames” for growing vegetables.

Otherwise, some find success with black rubber bowls.

can you construct a solar type system? Not much wattage needed for this purpose, so check YouTube for some DIY videos.

Thanks for your reply! We have plenty of fresh manure. I was wondering if maybe you could use an insulated rubber tire, put the manure in the center with a rubber water bowl on top? Just trying to combine all the options I’ve seen so far.
