Keeping water from freezing

I've been seeing all these posts about detailed water heaters with light bulbs and then I just thought well my fish stay warm and the heater is in the water, so why wouldn't that work? Lol

Lol, that was my thought when I tried it out. They don't work in the one gallon screw together type waterers that a lot of people use, because there's no way to run the cord out, so maybe that's why? But in a bucket or top fill waterer, they work well.

I guess it depends on how cold it gets where you are. I tried one when I was in Idaho (about a 3 gallon bucket) and it didn't keep the water from freezing. I ended up with a bucket heater and a thermocube that would only turn on the heater when the temperature was cold enough. That worked to keep things unfrozen even when it was below zero.
