Hi there!
Here in Key West we have a special "breed" of chicken that roams free and has a protected status. Roosters, hens and chicks roam the yards of Old town, the parking lots of Home Depot and Walgreens and lay their eggs in flower pots and garden furniture.
A friend of mine was redoing her landscape a little over a year after devastating destruction caused by Hurricane Irma in 2017. She had told me eggs were common in the yard and she worried what would happen when they did the remodel. I told her to let me know if she had any orphan eggs. Interior home repairs and exterior re-construction complete she moved on to cleaning out damaged foliage and long dead potted plants. Two days later she found a hen had laid eggs in her newly empty pot. But she didn't return.
When she called, distraught, and asked for my help I was very ready to help. I had just set 6 bantam eggs in an incubator big enough for 12 large eggs on Feb 22 about 6pm. So on Saturday Fb 23rd I set the KW eggs with the bantams about 28 hours after the bantams were set. Today is day 20 for my KW chickens and 21 for the bantams but the KW chickens are hatching first!
I worked on a ranch many years ago but I still felt like I over henned my eggs. All temp and humidity sensors gave different readings and even after I calibrated them they were all over the place so I checked the readings every 4 hours at least. I know I candled a bit too often too.
But so far, on lockdown everyone but 1 egg was alive. I am praying my little flock arrive safely into the world through their hatch ordeal. Two pippped and popped out in a 2 hour period already. Amazing.
