Khaki hen dead!? Help!

No, the poison is only in the house where mice keep running around. But I know the mice live outside all around the house..
I can't believe I poisoned my own duck...and that more may be poisoned...ugh...

I looked the roo over yesterday, 1st day he limped, no issues or bites.

I think I need to just let them all go and only keep birds for food. This is just too depressing..

Sorry for our loss. I agree with others, it could be toxin. However, unless you have an autopsy done, you may never know if it was the mouse poison or not. And, even if she did eat a poisoned mouse, it doesn't mean that she got enough of the poison in her to kill her that fast. Have you inspected her body for bites and stings (including her mouth)?

It might not have even been the mouse poison like desert darlene said examine her closely to see if she could have got bittne by something. she could have eaten a blk widow or a brown recluse spider.

I did a little research on mouse poison and most don't kill the mouse right away. The amount of time it takes for them to kill a mouse depends on what type you give them. Some take up to a week to work. Many poisons simply work by causing a vitamin deficiency that makes their blood vessels burst easily and they die from internal bleeding. If that's the kind you used, your duck would have been acting poorly at least a few hours before she died.

Even with the other kind, unless she ate the bait directly, it would be diluted as it worked through the mouse's system, so it wouldn't have killed her that fast and you would have seen symptoms.

Check the package, there should be a number on it to call the company for information. They will tell you how fast it works and what it does.

Well the poop on her butt is probably just happenstance because animals 'relax' when they die & can release urine and/or stool at that time. It looks normal colored so I would write it off as that. The bubbles in/around her mouth though make me think choking or something similar, a reaction to something she ate (do you know if you happen to have poisonous plants?), etc. I wouldn't expect mouse poison to work that quickly without some other symptoms going along with it. I would expect the 2hrs before death, she'd have been acting somewhat sluggish, but I'm more familiar with mammals in that area than birds.
I'm sure I'm totally off but it just reminds me of a drowning incident for some reason. (Can anyone tell me how hard it is for a duck to aspirate?)

If you're really worried about the mouse poison, maybe you could have a necropsy done to tell you what happened with the duck.

As to your rooster, maybe he landed wrong coming off a roost.

She was as stiff as a board, mouth wouldn't open. No bites or anything external. Both sisters were acting fairly normal, they don't eat the purple staining plant that's poisons. I haven't found those spiders here yet, just that creepy black one w/yellow, makes a Z web and shakes when you scare it, I forget what it's called. It's in the can now, I ain't putting it in my fridge until I can dive 3hrs w/a rotting duck to the vet that does necropsy.

I really really hope the roo just hurt himself by tripping or jumping down. I've had other birds w/a bum leg, they always die, symptom of other things. But those birds were weak, thin, stressed or just off already. He's a very big and strong roo.

I'm really sorry about you Khaki

I don't think your duck and rooster's injury are related. Really can't say what happened but I've had a khaki die from a heart attack from being scared after she got stuck and couldn't get back out and we had runner who just 1 day was lying in the run (door was open) with her insides out. No apparent reason. The rest of our birds were fine. The rest of yours could be fine too.

I can understand how you feel, but you mustn't blame yourself , if you are. Keeping farm animals has it's drawbacks and unfortunately this is one. I am sorry for your loss.

As for mice and poisons , I don't advise keep any of these things around. I prefer traps so I know I've got them little bugger for sure. Poultry will eat just about anything at least once. Saw an xray of one that had a one inch screw in it's gut.

Take care and I hope you feel better soon,

Rancher
