The starter feed that I have is 20% protien to increase growth. Some owner's feed this until POL, but I have read that this much protein is hard on the kidneys of immature birds. Wouldn't the higher protein also be damaging to the baby chicks kidneys as well? I also know that POL pullets need calcium but this is verbotten for babies also, presumably for kidney damage as well.

Now, I know there are some very smart people with better nutritional knowledge than I have...can someone(s) explain the proper ratios and reasons for?
My head is starting to hurt:he

You might want to post this in the Feeding forum--hopefully one of the feed gurus such as Mac in Allbilene or Jazy J would weigh in. As for the calcium issue, you can feed them a starter/grower, and leave out oyster shell free choice, so when they need it, they take it. They will start getting into the oyster shell 1-2 weeks before laying. IMHO the difference between 16% and 20% is not going to ruin their kidneys.
