I have a little brother who is 7 years old. I also have a dog. My brother is not gentle to my dog so, I don’t think he will be gentle with the chicks I’m getting. Is there a way to teach him to be gentle or a way to keep the chicks out of his reach?

before I did my first hatch in my classroom, we practiced gentle holding. I gave kids colored tissue paper flowers--the kind we all used to make--like pom poms. they were told to cradle the "chick" without holding it tightly--the chick will settle in your hand. then I took the flower and had them wet their hands slightly. I gave them back the flowers and said I was looking for the people whose flowers did not get too wet(gentle cradling). They got the idea, and I quickly saw whose hands were too rough/grippy and who got the concept

He might surprise you and be gentle with the chicks. My 8 year old son likes to be rough all the time with the dog but when we got baby chicks I only had to tell him once to be gentle because they are fragile and he was very very careful and gentle with them.

any paper you can make a pompom with--the tissue paper changes color when wet--more graphic for special ed students

Personally I just wouldn't let him handle the birds until they're feathering in. Less delicate then, but then again, i just don't trust children.
