So, my daughter is in 4H. I am the poultry leader for the club. This year she decided to raise some turkeys for the fair. The rules are very specific they have to be between 16-18 weeks old and there is very specific weight limits. she had 3 poults and 2 survived, both hens. We took them to the fair today for weigh in and only one made weight. Turns out, Her turkey is the ONLY ONE out of all the clubs in the area that made weight. Her turkey is the ONLY ONE entered at the fair this year!! It will still be judged for the fair...I wonder what the outcome will be. We will find out next Thursday!

sorry it took so long. I have been "living" at the fair. The weight for toms is 32 lbs at 18-22 weeks. and the weight for hens is min. of 15 1/2 lbs. at 18-22 weeks. I found out that the rule book had a typo error for the toms. they are supposed to be a bit older. I really think that the heat out here in socal is what slowed them down. we had a bit of a heatwave for at least a week and not many animals were chowing down like they normally would.

Anyway, my daughter got grand champion!!!! the judge told the audience at the beginning that just because this is the only turkey that is judged, doesn't mean that it will win and blah blah blah.. She said that there are many factors to account for and the turkey must meet certain standards etc. Well, in the end after examining our hen she was pleasantly surprised and said that the turkey was exceptional!! Next week.......show chickens!!
