Kiki's found horse eggs—experiment Round 2

My mom is allergic to iodine, but still eats shellfish

No shrimp, lobster, crab, oysters, scallops, muscles, anything else along those lines. It doesn't bother me too much, I was always squeamish about eating something that looked like a big bug anyway.
 You are missing out on some good foods.
:hugs:hugs:hugs

@Redhead Rae It doesn't always go both ways, but as an RN I would recommend that if you are ever hospitalized or are asked if you are allergic to anything, you let them know you have a shellfish allergy as well as any drugs you may be allergic to. Not trying to be argumentative, just safe. :hugs

@Ursuline Chick -- How are both Moms doing with their clutches? Are they all in the same area and getting along together? I've always loved watching Mom showing the chicks the ropes.

Sadly no one in my coop is showing the least sign of going broody. That means I'm going to have to kick all the hens out of the coop "annex" -- which they love being in -- and turn it into the brooder. I keep telling them, if you want to keep your annex, one of you has to go broody. They just won't listen.

They are all doing really well, will be posting pics later today. Both are still in their own broody box and run set ups and so have not been integrated. Will have to integrate in then next few weeks. One Broody has 8 chicks (with the wild boy being one of them) and the other has 2 chicks so we will see how it works or if I have to let them grow out in their own respective set ups. Will be calling on St. Brigid big time when the time comes. :lau

Any one who can offer advice regarding this integration process for when the time comes, please offer suggestions, any and all ideas would be welcome. Thanks y'all.

We had a broody hatch a lonely only chick last month (my own version of experimenting with eggs I bought to eat, but planted instead.) The BYC experts said that after a week of them being in a broody cage inside the coop, mom & baby could be let out with the rest of the flock. I'm paranoid so I waited 2wks. They have meshed in with the flock amazingly well. Some of the big girls peck mom because shes been out of the Alpha order for so long, but most of them are fine with Baby Iris. Shes been pecked a few times, but its not been super vicious like when you introduce bator hatched birds.

Are they in visual contact with the flock? I think that makes a big difference.

Last group of chicks I had to brood myself, I put them in my outside brooder -- the coop annex" that has a hardware cloth window to the main coop. When they were around 2 weeks, I started putting them in a fenced off part of the chicken yard, so they could see the other birds. When they were 5 or 6 weeks or so, I opened the fenced area and the birds mingled together almost immediately with no problems. The little ones were at the dead bottom of the pecking order, of course, but were not unduly harassed.

It should work even better with a broody mom involved. If you can put mom and her chicks in a safe area next to, or within the coop or run, for a couple of days, so they get used to each again, I would think the integration should be pretty smooth. Will put in a prayer to St. Brigid for you.
