This picture is from my very first broody hatch. I had a hen sitting on 4 eggs. I wasn't entirely sure they were even fertile as my young rooster had just started getting his moves together. The poor eggs were also quite dirty and smeared with dried yolk, as she pooped on the nest early on, then an egg broke later. I was brand new to chickens and didn't have a clue what I was doing. Her nest is an old wine box. I had never even heard of candling eggs. The broody herself was a teen-mom -- just was 7 months old. I really didn't expect anything to happen, but I'll never forget going to check on the morning of day 21 and seeing the chick pop out from under Mom. I just about broke a leg racing back to the house to tell my husband.

So Was making sure she had what she needed and heard a peep! Then out popped a French Blue copper marans chick to see what was going on!
