@KDOGG331 You made the right choice culling that bird. I doubt that was treatable.
Thank you! That’s good to know. I feel bad it even got to that point though  one of them, I’m guessing this one but idk, had like bumblefoot and a weird nail when I first put them outside a few weeks ago so I rinsed it off and put neosporin on it and it seemed fine and thought it got better but evidently not. I feel terrible. I’m sure it was very painful. 😭 I check on them at least every day, usually multiple times a day, but I don’t really handle them and hard to notice issues like that when I have so many running around. I feel awful.

Should I off the boy do or do you think he will be okay? Should I take him in and wrap it? I feel bad treating him and killing her

He’s so gorgeous so idk what to do 😭

Are you keeping them on wire?

It's okay!
It was my first time.... 🤭
seeing them so exposed but, interesting and the photo quality is great! My ghettro cannot compare.
Thank you!! :love

I spatchcocked them (cut the spine out) as I find it’s far easier to take the organs out that way so that might be why they look more exposed to you? I also skinned them as opposed to scalding or plucking.

Yes I am but they also have a bunch of dirt boxes in there covering most of the floor now. Although I only recently added more. There were only two in before. The cage wire is also way too big though I think. I need to replace it. It’s 1x1  I think I’m gonna cut some hardware cloth from one of my other pens cause we have some excess there and put it on the floor. Or I also recently got some half inch by one inch if that would work. I think the big wire is the problem though maybe??? Or is any wire bad??

Honestly, I won't use wire for any animals these days. I would be willing to bet that it's the cause of your current foot problems.
The male's foot looks pretty bad as well, it looks like deep swelling rather than simply a surface abrasion. However, perhaps it will resolve with time if you move him to a better surface.

I'll definitely come to you if I need to cull any chickens. I am kind of a wuss 😖

Okay thank you! That makes sense. I actually wanted to build them an aviary originally but we don’t really have the room for another pen :hmm I’m sure I could find the room though since it wouldn’t have to be very big I wouldn’t think? Maybe for now I can just add some more dirt boxes so there’s no exposed wire? I’m debating whether to off him because I don’t want him to be suffering but I really like his coloring. 😭😭😭

Eh, I've healed worse. Just recently I had a quail lose all the flesh on the left side of its face, including half an eyelid. I didn't even clean it; the bird healed entirely (minus a weird eye) without any interference on my behalf. I'd give it some time and see if the swelling goes down. If not, then I'd cull it.

It’s okay! I used to be too! Just a few short months ago actually haha never thought I could kill anything but then I had two chickens come down with Mareks and had to put them down a month apart. That was in April and May. Then one quail was hurt or sick and not improving so I had to put her down on Monday. Decided to practice processing on her. And then the rest of these quail were starting to fight each other so some males had to go. Plus the swollen foot female. I honestly wasn’t sure if I could do it since they were all healthy and it’s far different than putting down a sick bird hence why I put it off so long but I’m honestly glad I was able to do it. My mom of course was upset I was killing pets but to me they weren’t pets. My chickens are. I knew I would have to kill some of these eventually. But I never thought I could kill anything ever previously. I also never thought I would hatch and I have 3 times now (well my broody hatched one batch). I’ve learned a lot the last year lol
