Killer Dog - Heartbroken

Here's another "freak" with lots of hugs for you. If I couldn't have my chickens in my yard, I think I would just move back to the city!

My family thinks my coop couldnt be more secure and that i am over doing it, but dang if i'll do all i can to do what i can too. AND im sure even at that, im not as secure as possibly i should be. My girls are only protected by 6ft fences and bushes during the day where they are out and about, and a determined something could get through and i'd fee awful, BUT, i can only hope that negiboring people are doing their part too. We do our best,,, im just sorry that someone else didnt (your neighbor) and that it ended so sad. We all understand here...

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's hearbreaking isn't it?

I had a problem with the neighbor's dogs for a few months as well. Fortunately, I can shoot them on site where I live. So after asking, begging and telling them to keep their dogs up, I finally said I would not be talking to them about their dogs anymore, I'd just shoot them on site, period. No phonecalls, no reminders, nothing. So, I haven't seen their dogs on my property in a while, and they got rid of a few trouble makers.

Unfortunately, people who don't care have short memories and their dogs are running at large again. I have no clue what makes people think they can let their dogs run amok on someone else's property, especially when they KNOW they are prey-driven and that you free range. But again, it's fortunate that I can (and I am) ready for them.

I wish you the best in protecting your flock, whatever you do

If one of our dogs usually a puppy killed a chicken, she would tie the
dead bird to the back of their collar and let them wear it for a couple
of days. They would never even look at a chicken again.

Didn't work for me. My dog just continued to eat the dead chicken tied around her neck.

I finally had to rehome her to a nice farm without chickens...and she was a Great Pyrenees, supposed to protect not kill.

People whose dog's maim or kill our birds should be billed, fined etc. It is unfortunate but until or unless the collective consciousness is raised about people needing to be much more responsible with their dogs, tragedies like this will continue to happen every single day across the land. The number of dog 'incidents' reported here on BYC alone is staggering and doesn't seem to be letting up.

Our bird's lives are priceless and truly cannot be measured by something as trivial as money but bills and fines at least convey to some degree that these beings have/had value. Unfortunately there are humans who do not perceive value unless their pocketbooks are affected.

There are countless threads here on BYC re: how to go about billing dog owners and about how to have them cited for violations of laws, ordinances etc. Hopefully these efforts help make the world a safer place for future chickens.

I am so very sorry for the horror that was imposed upon your birds.
